Willimansett Bridge Before and After
The historic Willimansett Bridge, spanning the Connecticut River between Holyoke and Chicopee, MA  was completed in 1891.  A badly needed restoration of the bridge was begun in 2011 by a Danish company.  When Pihl, Inc. went bankrupt the work stopped,
inconveniencing hundreds of commuters and hitting hard at local businesses near the bridge.

Northern Construction of Palmer, MA was then awarded the contract and finished ahead of
the new schedule in June 0f 2015. You have to wonder why a foreign company would be awarded
the contract, when all along the best company for the job was only a few miles away.

Anyway in 2003, I was on my way to work when I saw how deteriorated
the bridge was and stopped to take a series of photos.   We photographers are fascinated by
decay, texture, and geometry.  In 2015 I took a series of the glistening “new” bridge and these
photos make up the “after” images in the slide show.
